Each of the three schools had their own curriculum. Each curriculum was subdivided into blocks. The trainee was given a grade for each block of study, then all blocks were weighted-averaged for a final grade. It can be compared to university study where a block was similar to semester and final grade your overall GPA. At the completion of each block of study the trainee was given a report card. The following are actual trainee report cards issued at NATTC, Norman to R. H. Smith for the 21 week course he took in Aviation Metalsmith (AM). He completed the course on June 16, 1945 with a final grade of 85.75. Also shown is his graduation program.

All Naval Trainees were required to take a minimum of three weeks swimming instruction and expected to pass the "C" test. Of all the physical training activities at NATTC swimming was considered one of the most important. Swimming and survival techniques were considered, and still are, essential in Naval and amphibious warfare. Even officers were required to participate in the activity.
